Camel Viaduct, Wadebridge - Phase Two Essential Maintenance commencing September 2026
Scheduled to avoid busy highway embargo periods, this second phase will include improvements to the cable ducting within the footway of the south side of the bridge, followed by waterproofing the remaining section of the south side carriageway.
Thereafter, the transatlantic fibre-optic communication cables within the north footway, will be moved across to south side by the relevant utility companies. This will ensure that future bridge maintenance and access to the cables, can be carried out safely and without risk to the underlying fibre-optic cables, which are classified as critical infrastructure.
Commencing on 7th September, the ducting improvements and waterproofing works on the south side carriageway, are expected be complete by the end of February 2027. Relocation of the cables will follow thereafter, and the cable-owners anticipate a four-week program of work .
Phase Two Traffic Management
Whilst every effort will be made to minimise disruption during these essential maintenance phases, delays are possible. Please allow extra time for your journeys when you can.
- Two-way traffic lights will be in place and temporary bull barriers will be installed to protect the workforce and demark the construction section.
- The traffic lights will use auto-green technology to optimise traffic flow and reduce congestion, and a temporary 40mph speed limit will be in place from Tollgate roundabout to Ball roundabout for the duration.

As a result, the safety barriers and current traffic management arrangements will be removed by the end of today, meaning that the Camel Viaduct will be open to two-way traffic as usual throughout the weekend. At this stage, there will be no permanent road markings in place, but the road will be fully open for vehicles in both directions, with signage in place.
After the weekend, temporary two-way traffic lights will be reinstated for a short period, to allow the team to safely undertake ducting works and complete the road markings. These activities are planned to take place early next week and are expected to be completed by close of Friday 1st May, after which the traffic lights will be removed again.
We appreciate everyone’s continued patience while these final elements are completed.

All waterproofing works were finished on 1st April, which is a key milestone for the scheme. Kerbing works then took place and were finished by the 9th, with gullies reinstated by 13th April and sub-surface drainage also installed.
We have experienced some challenges in sourcing the correct type of tarmac and as a result, the current programme shows that we will complete this phase of the project by 1st May 2026, when the temporary traffic lights will be removed.
We know the ongoing disruption is frustrating and we’d like to thank residents, businesses and road users for their continued patience and understanding while this important refurbishment is completed.

Each stage of the waterproofing must be completed in sequence, with every layer applied and fully cured before the next can begin. Only once this multi‑layer process is successfully finished can we move onto finishing works including laying kerbs, resurfacing the carriageway with asphalt, applying the road marking and footway works.
Despite the challenging weather we’ve experienced so far this year, the project has remained largely on track. However, due to the very specific environmental conditions required for the waterproofing process, combined with further stormy weather in recent weeks, we now expect the programme to extend slightly. At this stage, completion of the works is likely to fall during the week commencing 13 April. If the weather is kind and there is any opportunity to finish earlier, we will absolutely do so. Once the waterproofing and surfacing are complete, our team will remain on site to carry out footway works, but traffic will run in two narrowed lanes and the temporary traffic lights will be removed.
For the Easter weekend and the subsequent weekends, the traffic lights will be manually operated during daytime hours to help manage flow, and vehicle actuated outside working hours.

We are closely monitoring conditions to ensure each stage is carried out safely, efficiently and to the required standard.
Kerbs are already on site and ready for installation. As soon as the waterproofing is fully complete and cured, we will begin reinstating the footway.

A small number of areas have been identified as needing repair, and this work is scheduled to take place over the coming week.




Once these repairs are complete, we’ll begin the next sequence of works, including priming the bridge deck, applying the new waterproofing system, installing the kerb and then resurfacing the deck. This will complete the first phase of the programme and we’ll then move on to the next section of the bridge and repeat the process.

Because it has been in place for many years, this material has become very hard and well bonded to the waterproofing membrane, making it more difficult to lift than expected. Once this layer is cleared along the full length, we will begin removing the old waterproofing underneath.

Camel Viaduct, sometimes known as Wadebridge Bypass Viaduct, was built in the early 1990s to redirect through-traffic away from Wadebridge town centre, alleviating congestion on the medieval Old Bridge.
The viaduct spans the tidal River Camel with nine reinforced concrete box spans, stretching approximately 450 metres. It was designed to withstand decades of use and has been a critical piece of Cornwall's road infrastructure for over three decades, supporting local connectivity and tourism. 
After more than thirty years of constant use and exposure to the elements, an essential maintenance project has been planned for Camel Viaduct. The project involves replacing the bridge’s waterproof protection to ensure its long-term structural integrity and safety. This will help prevent water ingress, which can cause damage to the bridge deck and supporting structures.
Due to the presence of transatlantic communication cables within the bridge footway, the original method of construction and delivery has been revised. Extensive investigations and trial pits revealed ducting surrounded by concrete and it was confirmed that the risk of damaging the ducting (which houses the fibre-optic cables) was too great to proceed with the original construction method. These cables are classified as critical infrastructure, and any damage could have significant consequences and disruption.
The waterproofing is to be carried out in three phases over the next few years, carefully scheduled to avoid busy highway embargo periods. This phased approach will allow us to carry out the works safely and effectively, while minimising disruption to the highway network. Also now included, will be work to enhance the ducting that sits within the footpath, ensuring future access and maintenance can be achieved safely and without risk to the underlying fibre-optic cables.
The existing road surface, pavements, kerbs, and drainage will be removed to expose the concrete bridge deck beneath. The old waterproofing layer stripped away and the deck inspected, cleaned, and repaired where needed. A primer will then be applied, followed by a new waterproof membrane. The road surface, pavements, kerbs and drainage will then be re-installed.
