Phase Two - 18th September 2026
Works at Camel Viaduct are now underway. Since commencement, the team has established the temporary traffic management arrangements and site safety measures have been put in place, with barriers and protective fencing installed to safeguard both the workforce and members of the public. The existing carriageway surface layer has been removed, as have the old kerbs, and taken for recycling. Removal of the existing footway and the redundant ducting beneath is now underway.
As part of the project, ecological surveys have also been carried out. These inspections confirmed that a resident bat colony remains present within the structure and, encouragingly, the population has increased following successful breeding. The project team is continuing to work closely with ecological specialists to ensure the bats remain protected throughout the programme of works.
Over the coming week, attention will continue to focus on removal and disposal of the footway and ducts. Preparations for the waterproofing itself will also begin, starting with removal of the red sand asphalt layer that protects the existing waterproofing.
