Local craft business thrives online during lockdown

by Cornish Whispers, over 3 years ago

Cornish Whispers make a range of beautiful wooden personalised gifts, all designed manufactured and finished by hand in Rising Sun, Cornwall. The business was founded by husband and wife team Adam and Emily McCollough six years ago working from a garden shed in the bottom of their garden.

They built the business slowly and organically through the use of free social media channels like Facebook and Instagram to show off their wares alongside their website, and craft fairs to get their creations seen. As soon as the coronavirus pandemic hit Cornwall and lockdown began, it initially appeared that without getting... Continue reading

Wedding Photography in the Pandemic in Cornwall

by Alchemy Photography, over 3 years ago

Alchemy Photography has been a wedding photographer in Cornwall for almost 10 years now and we have photographed nearly 500 weddings. Situated in Delabole North Cornwall we mainly cover weddings in Cornwall.

We also offer commercial photography, property, landscape and family portraits.

We have photographed around a dozen weddings since lockdown was lifted and in many ways the ceremony, the emotion and the feel of the wedding seemed little changed to normal. The obvious changes being masks, social distancing and the resticted numbers were apparent but for the couple it was still a lovely occasion and more intimate.

    We've seen... Continue reading

    Local Shopper.

by LindsayS, over 3 years ago
I don't have a business but always try to shop local for environmental reasons. I think small independents are always at a disadvantage because of business rates and the 'proximity' to government of the big supermarkets. It is a total myth that stuff is cheaper in the big stores. They have 'loss leaders' where they screw the Farmers. Their practices are appalling and they take no heed of bad harvests. Going to big stores tends to rely on car ownership too and encourages short, polluting journeys.

The independents looked after people do well during lockdown, they deserve a boost now... Continue reading

    Noticing.

by bookmark, over 3 years ago

I noticed whilst shut throughout lockdown that Instagram was the chosen way to contact me, therefore i was selling more to a much younger customer believing the usual customer may be shielding and not out daily walking and browsing my shop window. I thought whilst the students or staff are off or furloughed they must be reading more? Knowing my industry very well I decided upon opening up again to dress the window accordingly and so now have a new crowd with a love for reading and browsing my shop. They've discovered beauty maybe of the quirkiness and smell of... Continue reading

    Retraining

by Adrian Swall, over 3 years ago

Two months ago, I contacted three local fencing contractors to request an estimate for work to be carried out at my property. The first one ignored my request. The second one promised to visit, but failed to materialise. The third one promised to give me a quotation but not for at least six weeks, owing to pressure of work. Ten weeks later, I’m still waiting, I live in hope, but it seems that, at the age of 75, I am going to have to tackle the job myself.

This situation has nothing to do with the current pandemic, or its... Continue reading
