Retraining

Two months ago, I contacted three local fencing contractors to request an estimate for work to be carried out at my property. The first one ignored my request. The second one promised to visit, but failed to materialise. The third one promised to give me a quotation but not for at least six weeks, owing to pressure of work. Ten weeks later, I’m still waiting, I live in hope, but it seems that, at the age of 75, I am going to have to tackle the job myself.

This situation has nothing to do with the current pandemic, or its necessary restrictions. In the past, I have had similar experiences with electricians, plumbers and builders. So, I am aware, have many other householders. There are not enough competent tradespeople in the area.

What is my point here? I believe that now is the time to stop lamenting the current lack of opportunity for earning a living selling ice creams and pasties to fickle seasonal tourists. I believe that the Council should be instrumental in the promotion and sponsorship of retraining of the working population in useful occupations , with a view to strengthening the infrastructure of the county.
