We want to capture the stories of heroes across Cornwall and how they reacted to and worked to help people and communities during the covid-19 outbreak.

    Local businesses have been very innovative and have worked hard to provide essential services, from farm shops to take-away foods. The work environment has been challenging but they have done their utmost to support residents and we appreciate their hard work.

    During the present crisis, sight has been lost of Cornwall as the fifth nation of the UK. The expression “the nations in the UK which have devolution of public health” has been reduced, incorrectly, to “the four devolved nations” or even “the four nations of the UK”. Cornwall has a small measure of devolution, but not nearly so much as the other Celtic nations of the UK. I draw attention to two areas in which Cornwall should have devolved powers.     Our experience has surprised us. My partner retired on the 2nd January and underwent the removal of his prostate cancer on the 6th. He’s been recovering ever since with a few knock backs along the way. I work in retail food so was designated an essential worker. I shielded him by stripping off my uniform when I entered the house and kept it away from him until my next shift. Fortunately we have not had COVID-19.     I have been self-isolating here in Lostwithiel. From Day One of the lockdown, my good neighbour, Chrisie Anders, has looked after my every need. She has done all my food shopping and has even begun to anticipate what I might enjoy. Every Sunday I find a delicious, hot Sunday Lunch complete with Yorkshire pudding and amazing dessert on my doorstep. How can I adjust to reality when this is a thing of the past ? And how can I thank you enough, Chrisie? You are a true Hero!

    She is well loved by patients. Over the last at least 10 years her and all other's salary has decreased in real terms. Work loads have increased for all NHS and Care workers. And what will we do for all underpaid workers in this wealthy country. Remember the clapping when you vote the next time!

    Our part of the Kenwyn area of Truro has recently been greatly enhanced by the development of woodland walks at Coosebean and by the cycle path, the creation of a wildlife and wildflower zone at the bottom of Bosvigo Lane, in Daubuz Moor in the town centre, and elsewhere. My wife and I recently met the man chiefly responsible: he was with his truck doing some maintenance work at what he calls John Tann Land.     I want to thank Andreyus, our hard working delivery driver, who has kept us supplied with goods ordered online. Tamar Grow Local food hub has been brilliant and a lifeline for many people. The Carpenters Arms in Harrowbarrow has provided delicious home made takeaway pizzas. The carers at Peninsula Care and staff at Abbeyfield Buckland Monachorum have looked after my mum while I couldn't. Thanks to all of them.

    Pauline Giles has not only set up St Blazey Reuse Recycle but during the closure she and her partner Dave, together with a team of volunteers, have run a food bank to support those unable to get out or on low incomes. They have at risk to themselves parcelled up and delivered food, organised items such as microwaves etc. As we know there were shortages of many items but imagine not having basic food, formula or nappies for your children

    I'd like to thank Verena from the Cornwall Music Service Trust who, since lockdown, has continued to provide regular online music lessons out of the goodness of her own heart for my daughter and many of her school friends locally. My daughter's piano playing has come on leaps and bounds since lockdown and she really looks forward to her fortnightly virtual lesson with Verena. Verena is so patient, encouraging and cheerful. My daughter has even been entered for her first exam, something that I doubt would have happened if we didn't have all this extra time in which to practise... Continue reading
