The Making Space for Sand project (MS4S) is working with Cornwall Council to consider how natural processes of dune roll-back can be maximised to offer coastal protection within a Shoreline Management policy of Managed Retreat with a sub-policy of ‘natural features’.

To help move towards this, Cornwall Council has commissioned Landscape Architects Mei Loci to engage the public in consultation about the future potential layout and function of the site at St Gothian Sands.

The site is a Local Nature Reserve, and conservation of habitat and species will remain a top priority It is al a very popular destination beach, with car parking pressure having the potential to damage the environment and impact the safe use of local roads.

The existing Red River Vision Plan identifies St Gothian Sands as a potential hub for encouraging more active travel to the destination, but any alteration of landuse will need to be carefully planned as this site is also a Local Nature Reserve, and part of the Hayle Dune System County Wildlife Site.

The spatial plan, that Mei Loco are tasked with developing through consultation, will respond to the MS4S re-naturalisation agenda as well as integrating environmentally positive social and economic benefits.

Please check this website for dates on consultation events and on-line surveys, and subscribe for project updates if you would like to stay informed.
