Celebrating Newquay's history.

I hope it is ok putting forward an idea when I live in Sheffield. My 'name' represents the first year I visited Newquay as a 6 yrs old girl and apart from lockdown I have been every year since, usually several times. As a family we love Newquay. Our son and daughter in law got married there and our young Grandson George fundraises for the RNLI and received the Young Citizen Award in 2019. The changes we have noticed have not always been for the better, sadly.

My idea would be for local schools (a children's festival) to decorate the pedestrian area of the town with banners hung from the lamposts depicting the history of Newquay, eg history of surfing, its role in the war, 'magical mystery tour, lifeboat etc. Newquay has talented artists perhaps they could be encouraged to support the project.

- Empty shop windows have a board on them with a 'montage' of local views.

- Encourage visitors 'to look up'

(Drawings/poems done by children). Newquay has some lovely old buildings but unfortunately the lower parts have mainly been covered over so you need to look up to admire them.

I think Newquay as the surf capital of the UK should be celebrated with a town centre of surf shacks/cabins less tacky signage and all shops similar in design with cabin/shack frontage.  It would make Newquay town centre more attractive than it currently is whilst  celebrating our surf heritage and cool, laid back vibe that we uniquely have.  I’m thinking San Francisco, Gold Coast style right here in our beautiful town with our amazing community spirit.
