We’re planning improvements around Higher Stennack in St Ives, including improved crossing points, better planting, and new features like bike stands and a bench to make the area more welcoming.

What are we consulting on?

The scheme involves installing a new informal crossing point between the mini-roundabouts, creating a seating and cycle parking area and replacing one set of speed cushions with a flat top hump to make crossing the road easier. Two streetlights will be moved to ensure the signs are visible and to open up more space for pedestrians.

We’re also planning general maintenance and small improvements along the road. These include replacing the paving at crossing points with dropped kerbs and correctly aligned tactile paving. This will help people with visual impairments and make it easier and safer for people to cross the road, especially for those with pushchairs or in wheelchairs.

The signs in the area will be updated as part of the wider sign strategy in the area, which will be open for consultation later this year for 6 months, as part of an experimental traffic order (ETRO).

A plan showing the proposed changes is included.

Why are we doing this?

The aims are for the scheme are to make the space safer and easier for walking and wheeling, and to keep the street well-maintained.

Earlier ideas to change the junction layout and remove the mini-roundabouts were reconsidered after public feedback — including comments from a public exhibition in September 2024. This updated plan reflects that feedback.

Funding has been made available from the UK government as part of the St Ives Town Deal. More information and news on the Town Deal can be found at the following link: St Ives Town Deal Low Carbon Transport | Let's Talk Cornwall.
