EXPERIENCE is a tourism project looking to extend the traditional season and encourage visitors during the quieter months (October – March). By supporting businesses in the Penzance (and surrounding areas) to create new or adapted sustainable cultural experiences for the autumn and winter period that will feature in a targeted marketing strategy.

EXPERIENCE Strategy

EXPERIENCE will create a tourism strategy shift from a destination model to a sustainable cultural tourism approach. Striking a balance between economic development and the protection of cultural heritage and the natural environment.

The project involves six areas of the Channel region (Cornwall, Brittany, Pas-de-Calais, Compiègne, Norfolk and Kent).

Due to run until June 2023, the project is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Interreg France (Channel) England Programme. Of the €16.1 million ERDF committed to the total project, €1.9 million is allocated to Cornwall Council, which is investing a further €0.9 million.

EXPERIENCE aims to provide:

  • Tailor made business training to support the development of a sustainable cultural tourism model in the area.
  • Hand’s on business support to guide businesses to create bookable experiences and itineraries.
  • An options analysis report identifying target audiences and themes for cultural experiences.
  • A comprehensive upgrade of the Marazion- Penzance coast path to create a multi-use resilient path.
  • Creation of a “star experience” along the Mount’s Bay coast path – consisting of upgrade and the installation of an arts trail, which will create an iconic focal point for visitors to the path that deepens their connection with the place.
  • Delivery of targeted marketing strategy to reach new audiences and encourage visits during the October to March period.
  • Support the development of a cycling tourism strategy for the area and encouraging green transportation.
  • Engaging with local residents to ensure it leaves a positive impact.
  • Regular visitor, business and resident research that ensures the project is delivering for both residents and visitors.

Sustainability is at the core of this project and its ambitions. To encourage visitors to respect the natural environment, the project will invite visitors to make a promise to respect the natural environment and host community. What would you like to see in this promise?

The options analysis report highlights five thematic itineraries. Designed to encourage visitors to “discover the area like a local” uncovering the expected and unexpected stories. The five themes:

    1. Creative and culture
    2. The great outdoors
    3. The shoreline
    4. Sustainable food
    5. Sustainability and our planet

We are developing experience ideas based on the above themes, but we need local organisations input. If you have a product already available, potential ideas or looking for a business to collaborate on creating an experience, please comment below:
