Learning Curve - Employers must do more to support life-long learning

Published by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) in the September/October copy of 'The Professional Engineer', was the article 'Learning Curve: employers must to more to support lifelong learning'.

It was brought to our attention by our esteemed colleague and Enterprise Adviser, John Challenger.

John is passionate about his sector and has expressed concerns about the need to engage with more young people to fulfil the demand in skilled labour.

John said, "The analysis clearly points to a number of issues but what is clear is the scope and content of education in the county is in general not adequate to meet the requirements of the developing and important industries. It is extremely important that experienced professionals and companies start to engage with young people both in primary and secondary education to explain the very wide and well-paid opportunities in all engineering and technology sectors. We also need to include the parents in any dialogue, since they can also have a big impact on this issue.”

The Engineering and Manufacturing sector makes up 11% of the Cornish economy and it is estimated that about 60% of engineering companies in Cornwall except to have shortages (Cornwall Manufacturers Group).
