Published by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) in the September/October copy of 'The Professional Engineer', was the article 'Learning Curve: employers must to more to support lifelong learning'.

It was brought to our attention by our esteemed colleague and Enterprise Adviser, John Challenger.

John is passionate about his sector and has expressed concerns about the need to engage with more young people to fulfil the demand in skilled labour.

John said, "The analysis clearly points to a number of issues but what is clear is the scope and content of education in the county is in general not adequate to meet the requirements of the developing and important industries. It is extremely important that experienced professionals and companies start to engage with young people both in primary and secondary education to explain the very wide and well-paid opportunities in all engineering and technology sectors. We also need to include the parents in any dialogue, since they can also have a big impact on this issue.”

The Engineering and Manufacturing sector makes up 11% of the Cornish economy and it is estimated that about 60% of engineering companies in Cornwall except to have shortages (Cornwall Manufacturers Group).

More information about the local economy.

The Employer Standards for careers education provides a rigorous framework that enables businesses to understand what good careers education outreach looks like. Self-assessing against the framework will enable you to plan and structure engagement, ask the right questions, connect and share peer expertise and engage effectively with young people in schools, special schools and colleges. It will also allow you to benchmark yourself against others and access resources to support you progress.

    Employer Standards for Careers Education

Visit the CEC's website for resources will help you progress through the different scoring levels for each Standard (Aspiring, Achieving, Exceeding). Your recommendations report will guide you to most appropriate resources to support your improvement, for example:

    • Video case studies – stories and suggestions from other employers who’ve been striving to achieve or exceed against each standard.
    • Evidence packs – statistics and resources to help you build the business case for doing more.
    • Taking Action documents – tailored suggestions to improve against each standard depending on your size and score.

Inspire young people for their best next step

Further information about the standards will be circulated in due course but in the interim please visit - Employer Standards on the Resource Directory | CEC Resource Directory (careersandenterprise.co.uk)

The Skillsbuilder Framework is a trusted and strategic skills framework that is now well established in the education and business sector. There are tools and resources to support your organisation and below is a copy of the latest communication from the partnership following the Trailblazer launch this month. We have added the report to the documents area on the right.

    Dear all,

Thanks for your support of the Trailblazers Report launch last week. We were pleased to see such a lot of interest in this work, and the energy behind putting the ideas and insights to work. It’s fantastic to now have such strong evidence of the power of investing in essential skills to support outreach, recruitment and staff development. Thank you to our speakers on the day for bringing their experience to life.

I’m pleased to be able to share a link to the summary blog and the full report here.

I’m also glad to share two other opportunities that are coming up that I thought would be of interest:

Open Workshop: We have an open virtual workshop coming up on Thursday 6 October which explores how employers can boost new talent employability. With 75% of UK secondary and college students having a touchpoint with Skills Builder Partnership, the Skills Builder Framework can be used by employers to ensure that young people have clarity around job roles and workplace expectations. We will share practical advice, guidance and some quick wins on how to achieve this within your organisation. You can sign up here.

Skills Builder Handbook: We have recently launched our Skills Builder Handbook for Educators which allows teachers and trainers to build their learners’ essential skills. You can buy it now in paperback or eBook from Amazon or Waterstones.

    With all best wishes

    Tom

Employers often express an interest in engaging with young people who have Special Educational Needs and /or disabilities but sometimes tell us they worry about getting the language wrong. Here's a helpful article that explains the difference between SEN and SEND plus shares some of the helpful language to use. Autistic Spectrum Condition is a much more positive and accurate word than disorder for example. https://www.brightheart.co.uk/what-do-sen-and-send-mean
