Cornwall Council is inviting stakeholders and residents to take part in an online survey as part of a consultation on our new draft Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP) for 2026–2031. Your feedback is vital in helping us improve air quality and protect public health.
What is an Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP)?
An AQAP sets out the measures we will take to reduce air pollution and achieve compliance with national air quality standards. It includes both strategic actions across Cornwall and location-specific measures for areas with persistent issues. The plan is reviewed regularly to ensure it reflects current data, legislation, and best practice.
Our new draft AQAP outlines actions for the next five years (2026–2031) to:
Reduce emissions from traffic and other sources.
Improve air quality in remaining Air Quality Management Areas (AQMA’s).
Maintain compliance in areas where standards are already met.
What is an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA)?
An AQMA is a designated area where air quality does not meet national objectives, usually due to pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) from traffic emissions. When monitoring shows that air quality consistently meets the required standards, an AQMA can be revoked. Conversely, if levels remain high, the AQMA stays in place and targeted actions are developed.
Cornwall Council has recently been able to revoke six AQMAs following sustained compliance with national air quality objectives. However, three AQMAs remain in Launceston, Tideford, and Gunnislake, where NO₂ levels are still elevated, primarily from vehicle emissions.
Why Your Feedback Matters
The survey gives you the opportunity to share your views on the proposed actions and suggest additional ideas. Your input will help us:
Prioritise measures that are practical and effective.
Understand community concerns and expectations.
Shape a plan that works for residents, businesses, and visitors.
Your feedback will inform our ongoing decision-making process.
