Hidden Disabilities

by Peggy , 08 Oct 2020
I am partially Deaf, I am totally deaf in my left Ear and wear an hearing aid in my right ear. I look perfectly normal as people would say they can not see my hearing aid and if someone speaks to me especially if there is a lot of noise going on they become very rude and I have been barged past and told to tone my voice down when on my phone as I do not realise I am speaking loud. I feel that more should be done for disabilities in Cornwall due to working with adults with disabilities and them being mocked or bullied by people especially in schools and secondary schools have the highest bullying problem of young people with disabilities this needs to be addressed as this not acceptable. Especially as more young people with disabilities like Aspergers and other disabilities that are not always visible. The councils disabled policy needs to be updated and more done for young people who have hidden disabilities to be included and respected the same as everyone else to be a part of their community and not to feel scared to go to school or out because of the fear of being bullied.

You deserve so much better Peggy:  more should and could so easily be done within education settings in Cornwall to ensure the difficulties of folk with disabilities are better understood by their peers and others from an early age. and with the hope that that understanding will stay with the wider population through life.
