We are proposing to make changes to the pedestrian crossings and footways around Penwinnick Roundabout, St Austell (A390).
What are we consulting on?
We are intending to make safety improvements for pedestrians at Penwinnick Roundabout using the existing highway space. This will be in the form of new and enhanced crossing points, greater footway space (where possible) and tactile paving at all crossing points to assist partially-sighted users. Please see the locations & proposals below:
A390 Penwinnick Road
The crossing point will be widened to shorten the distance pedestrians need to cross and provide a better waiting area.
South Street
The footway will be widened by removing the central lane, which is narrow and rarely used, making more space for pedestrians and improving the remaining two lanes. The pedestrian island will also be rebuilt for an easier layout.
A390 Trevanion Road
A new crossing island will be added between the lanes for Mevagissey and Penwinnick Road to reduce the number of lanes pedestrians cross at once. The crossing point will be widened, and part of the grass verge near Penwinnick Roundabout will be removed to improve queuing space for the Mevagissey lane.
The pedestrian island will be rebuilt further east to better match walking routes and allow more space for traffic queues. The eastbound cycle lane will be slightly shortened, the westbound cycle lane slightly extended, and road signs will be moved to better locations.
B3273 Pentewan Road
The traffic island will be rebuilt with a wider pedestrian crossing and footway on the western side. The road will be reduced to two lanes with a longer lane split, making crossing easier and improving traffic flow.
The pedestrian island will be moved further southeast to better match walking routes and allow more space for vehicle queues.
Trewhiddle Road
The footway outside St Austell service station will be widened to shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians.
Penwinnick Roundabout
The roundabout and central island will be rebuilt for smoother traffic flow and to remove unused space. Minor changes to signage and possible landscaping on the central island are also planned, subject to confirmation.
Why are we doing this?
This site has been identified through analysis of road traffic collision data, the high flow at the junction makes it difficult for pedestrians to cross. A total of 26 collisions have been recorded over the last 10 years, resulting in 28 injuries, with 39% of the recorded injuries were pedestrians or cyclists.
Next steps
Once the Consultation finishes we will collect the feedback and traffic data to decide what to do next.
