Do you have a plan for the General Wolfe?
We want to hear from organisations interested in buying and refurbishing a well-known derelict building in the heart of St Austell Town Centre.
Former pub the General Wolfe and the adjoining former Globe Hotel building were converted into 3 flats more than 20 years ago. The building, which had fallen into disrepair, was bought by Corserv in 2020 with the aim of renovating the building to provide much needed housing in the town.
Since then however, the projected costs of undertaking this work have increased significantly, with latest estimates at more than £2.5m, making the renovation project unviable for Corserv and Cornwall Council.
As a result, we’re inviting Expressions of Interest from groups with plans to bring the property back into use.
Cllr Peter LaBroy, Cornwall Council cabinet member for housing, said: “We appreciate there are a lot of strong feelings in the town about the future of this building and the fact that little progress has been made over recent years. Some want it to be demolished, others want it to be protected. It is time for a decision to be made on the building’s future and as part of this process we want to understand if there are any community groups or other organisations out there with a vision for the site.”
Cllr Tim Dwelly, Cornwall Council cabinet member for economic regeneration and investment, said: “With its key location in the town centre, there is an opportunity here to bring the building back into use and create an attractive gateway to the high street.”
For enquiries about the Expression of Interest process and to request the Expression of Interest form, please email us at positiveplanning@cornwall.gov.uk
The deadline to submit an Expression of Interest is Monday 11 August 2025.
Please see videos of the interior of the building below. You will also find floor plans and a copy of the Asbestos Survey on this page.
