Learning Beyond the Classroom at The Outdoor Place

Your Future Kernow Visit The Outdoor place.

The Your Future Kernow team helps young people explore education, training and future options. As part of this work, the team visits different learning settings. This helps them learn about the support available and the pathways open to young people.

The team recently visited The Outdoor Place near Chacewater. They learned more about the support available for young people and who may benefit from a different approach to learning.

The Outdoor Place supports SEND and neurodiverse young people and adults. It provides a personalised learning environment where learners can build confidence, develop practical skills and work towards their goals. The team visited to gain a better understanding of the opportunities available and the support learners receive.

During the visit, the team saw the wide range of opportunities available on site. Activities include bushcraft, woodworking, animal care and a weekly community café. Learners also make products to sell in the organisation's shop in Truro, including handcrafted rocking horses.

The team left feeling positive about the visit. They appreciated the welcoming environment, supportive staff and woodland setting. They saw how learners build confidence and gain valuable life and work skills.

Staff also shared how they help young people work towards employment and adult social care pathways. The visit demonstrated how a learner-centred approach can support personal growth and positive outcomes.

"We all left feeling pretty chilled and could completely understood why this would work for young people." - Kate Your Future Kernow

The visit also highlighted the value of learning that is shaped around each learner's needs.

"The Outdoor Place offers an alternative way of learning centred around the learner's own goals and needs." - Kate Your Future Kernow

Your Future Kernow looks forward to working with The Outdoor Place in the future. The team hopes to learn explore how the setting can support suitable young people across Cornwall.
