Chough House

We are proposing to develop Chough House in Truro into a Safe Place to Stay

Chough House (River Street, Truro) would aim to provide people who find themselves without a home or at risk of street homelessness with a safe warm place to stay. The Chough House safe place to stay hub would also assist in finding occupiers permanent move on accommodation. This would provide a permanent building in Truro to provide this type of accommodation and would replace the temporary facility at the Carrick House site that has been put in place in response to the Covid-19 situation.

Once completed, Chough House would include:

• 9 single occupancy rooms each with an en-suite and kitchenets.
• One of the rooms will be a wheelchair accessible room, on the ground floor.
• The first and second floor will also contain staff offices and communal lounges, which in times of pandemic/other urgent need could be converted to additional temporary bed spaces.
• The ground floor will have cloth washing facilities, meeting rooms and staff areas.
• 24/7 security presence, with CCTV in/around the building;

The building will also have a new efficient air-source heating plant providing space/water heating.

Once built the facility will provide emergency accommodation to anyone who is in need.

Re-developing Chough House will cost in the region of £1.5 million including extensive works internally and to the building fabric. The Council is seeking Homes England Grant funding to cover a large proportion of the costs. The work would start on site in March 2021 (subject to planning consent) and the building could be ready for occupation in January 2022.
