To coincide with National Careers Week 2023, The Careers & Enterprise Company (CEC) has published ‘Ready for the Future: A review of Careers Education in England 21/22′ in March 2023 .

The report and press release are available on CEC’s website.

The report draws on data and insight from young people, schools and colleges and employers to set out the clearest picture of the careers education system to date. It analyses how much progress was made in the academic year 2021/22, what gaps remain and where we need to go next.

    Key insights include:

    • Survey of 35,000 young people shows 74% say they are career ready in Year 13, rising from 45% in Year 7.
    • Awareness of apprenticeships doubles from 39% in Year 7 to 81% by Year 11.
    • High quality careers education is helping to close the disadvantage gap, reducing NEET levels.
    • Work experience has bounced back to pre-pandemic level, up from 47% to 65%.

Brings the world of work alive in your classroom

    What’s in a building?
    Jobs you didn’t know existed

    Dear Caroline,

The easing of COVID restrictions has meant that our film crews can get out and about on location again to capture the world of work to bring to your classroom.

Our first assignment was filming at one of the most modern facilities in the country – the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus.

The project - What’s in a building? - is designed to bring to life construction jobs that young people didn’t know existed – or at least may not even have thought about.

In this WOW Show Special we meet five specialists – from architect to ecologist – all working to create more sustainable and environmentally friendly buildings.
    Watch video

We also take a look at more familiar trades which your students may think they know about – but which might surprise.

Click on the image to see the film

We show how it takes a range of skills, with people working together – just like a football team – to build homes, schools and hospitals as well as the futuristic office and science facilities we see at Harwell.

You can also see the film here: www.TheWOWShow.org/YouTube

To support the film, the Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (OxLEP) has commissioned a lesson plan and lesson slides authored by our partners, the teacher-led group VotesforSchools. This is a PowerPoint template where the new film is embedded and teachers can easily substitute information about construction projects and progression links specific to their region.
It is suitable for all year groups.

Get the classroom resources here: www.TheWOWShow.org/teachers/

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support during the past two difficult years – and to wish you a very happy and successful 2023!

    The Provider Access Legislation

There has been a slide deck created titled 'all you need to know' that we recommend you read. It covers:

    1. Why does this matter?
    2. What is the provider access legislation?
    3. What makes an encounter count?
    4. What happens if we don’t comply?
    5. Where can I go for more support?

There are at a glance details for both colleges and schools which can be found on this page. There's a suite of resources to support you to meet the benchmarks which are hosted on this page. Don't forget the local ITPs which are within the Which Way Your Way provider directory. There is a Cornwall, Plymouth and Devon version of the directory.

Click Here to access a summary of the changes to BM7 section of reviews in Compass and Compass+.

Making it meaningful, what does this mean?

Key aspects (at a minimum) you need to consider for any encounter and to make it meaningful:

    1. Information about the provider and the approved technical education qualifications or apprenticeships that the provider offers,
    2. Information about the careers to which those technical education qualifications or apprenticeships might lead,
    3. A description of what learning or training with the provider is like,
    4. Responses to questions from the pupils about the provider or approved technical education qualifications and apprenticeships.

As ever contact us for more information and support we are here to help.

    The Careers Hub website

A lot of work was done over the summer to support you with Benchmark 7. There is an FE section that provides an overview of the pathways students can take, there's information specifically for Higher Education and an Independent Training Providers sections. The Which Way Your Way booklet was sent to all schools and in there are all of the ITPs and their offer. Utilise the resources and information for your websites!
