Chemistry meet STEM learning at Brannel Secondary School

Tremendous Team Work
Brannel Secondary School becomes the latest participant in the Royal Society of Chemistry Project!

Delivered by The Education Business Partnership (EBP), who are funded by The Royal Society of Chemistry, this inspirational project introduces pupils to fascinating chemistry careers they never knew existed.
During the first session, pupils explored various careers within the chemistry field and tackled a problem-solving challenge for a family who moved to a remote island.

Pupils were introduced to the growing issues surrounding climate change, learning about the chemistry of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and nitrous oxide (N₂O), and their role in trapping heat within Earth’s atmosphere. They explored how human activities, like burning fossil fuels and agriculture, release these gases in large quantities, enhancing the natural greenhouse effect and driving global warming. The pupils were then tasked with helping a family make sustainable choices to minimise their carbon footprint, applying what they learned about the chemical reactions that produce greenhouse gases and the environmental impact of different compounds. This hands-on activity challenged them to think critically about chemistry's role in climate solutions and inspired them to consider how chemistry could help mitigate climate change in real-world contexts.

This was a creative way to combine careers, chemistry, and STEM learning into a highly engaging session. The session received positive feedback, with all pupils expressing a desire to do the challenge again and improve their design structures.

"I am excited about this project and want to know what's coming next." (A pupil at Brannel School)

Skills Builder skills are implemented throughout the sessions, with pupils consistently demonstrating and improving their abilities within this framework.

Super STEM is fun!
