The School Standards & Framework Act 1998 requires local authorities to establish a Relevant Area/s in which admission authorities must consult regarding their admission arrangements. Local authorities must consult on Relevant Area proposals every two years as prescribed in The Education (Relevant Areas for Consultation on Admission Arrangements) Regulations 1999.

Proposed Relevant Areas

Cornwall Council is proposing the following Relevant Areas for 2026/27 and 2027/28 admission arrangements. No changes are proposed from the Relevant Areas set for 2024/25 and 2025/26. Consultees:

  • Devon and Plymouth local authorities
  • All admission authorities for schools in Cornwall
  • All schools within the proposed relevant areas
  • The Diocesan authorities

Deadline for responses: 30 April 2024

Proposed Relevant Areas 2026/27 and 2027/28

Community and voluntary-controlled infant, junior, primary and secondary schools

Cornwall Council, as admission authority, will consult within the following relevant area:

  • The whole of Cornwall and other LA areas covered within 3 miles of the Cornwall LA border

Consultees will include:

  1. All community and voluntary-controlled infant, junior, primary and secondary schools within the relevant area
  2. All other admission authorities within the relevant area
  3. Diocesan authorities

Academy, foundation, trust and voluntary-aided infant, junior and primary schools

The admission authority (governing board or academy trust) will be required to consult within the following relevant area:

  • A 5 mile radius of the school, or where this covers a neighbouring authority area, to include up to 3 miles into that area.

Consultees will include:

  1. Cornwall Council
  2. All other admission authorities of infant, junior or primary schools within the relevant area
  3. Any other local authority which is the admission authority for a school within the relevant area
  4. The two nearest primary schools where these are not covered in the 5 mile radius
  5. The Diocesan authority (voluntary-aided schools only)

Academy, foundation and trust secondary schools

The admission authority (governing body or academy trust) will be required to consult within the following relevant area:

  • A 10 mile radius of the school, or where this covers a neighbouring authority area, to include up to 3 miles into that area.

Consultees will include:

  1. Cornwall Council
  2. All other admission authorities of primary and secondary schools within the relevant area
  3. Any primary schools that are not covered within the relevant area but which form part of the designated area used in the secondary school’s oversubscription criteria
  4. Any other local authority which is the admission authority for a school within the relevant area
  5. The two nearest primary and secondary schools where these are not covered in the 10 mile radius

    Your data will be stored securely and will only be accessible by members of Together for Families. Your consent for your data to be used in the evaluation will be assumed from you starting the survey.

    How will you store my personal data? 

    Survey responses will be collected using the Let’s Talk Cornwall survey software. By completing this survey, you consent to this transfer of your information.  This includes any information which may represent your personal data. All the information you share with Together for Families will be stored safely for the duration of the evaluation.  It will be destroyed one year after it has finished.
