The new proposals aim to build on the existing School Street scheme by improving safety for students, staff, and pedestrians.

What are we consulting on?

Through this consultation, we want to understand whether these proposals would build on the progress already made and further encourage active travel—such as walking and cycling—among students, staff, families, and local residents, and bring wider benefits to the village and the Mount Hawke community as a whole while further trying to reducing traffic congestion outside Mount Hawke Academy and on nearby streets during drop‑off and pick‑up times.

Why are we doing this?

Traffic and congestion outside Mount Hawke Academy during drop‑off and pick‑up times have previously raised safety concerns for students, staff, and pedestrians. The current School Street scheme has already helped to make the area safer and less congested at these busy times.

The new proposals aim to build on this progress by encouraging even more active travel—such as walking and cycling—among students, staff, families and local residents. Through this consultation, we want to understand whether these enhancements would deliver the desired outcomes for the village community.

School Streets schemes have worked well in many areas, making roads safer and reducing traffic around schools. They’ve also helped more children, families, and residents choose walking, wheeling, and cycling for local journeys.

Cornwall Council is now looking at ways to further improve the School Streets scheme in Mount Hawke. Together, we want to create a safer, calmer, and improved environment for local residents and the members of the Mount Hawke Academy school.
