The intention of this survey is to investigate opinions surrounding low carbon heating systems and the associated limiting barriers to their installation.

This survey is part of research being carried out by Cornwall Council employee Helen Dalton in partnership with University of Wolverhampton. The research will be used as part of dissertation analysis looking at the most limiting factors in the move to low carbon heating systems in domestic buildings in Cornwall.

It has been identified that the UK is significantly off-track to achieve its Net Zero climate commitments for 2050 (Climate Change Committee, 2021).

To meet targets, significant change to the UK’s heating systems is required.

Cornwall was identified for this research for its county’s characteristics:

  • The majority of Cornwall is rural and has limited connection to gas mains- making it a suitable destination for low-carbon micro-generation.
  • Cornwall has one of the highest areas of Oil and bottled gas fuel sources for heating- England only heats 3.35% of homes using oil whereas Cornwall heats 15.36% (Office for National Statistics, 2020)
  • Cornwall Council declared a Climate Emergency in 2019 (Cornwall Council 2022).

This research aims to examine the limiting barriers of low carbon heating systems in existing buildings in Cornwall and to compare how these are represented in the national public attitudes survey.

UPDATE: Entries to be completed by Monday 13th of March.
