LNRS Engagement
Cornwall Council with support from the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Nature Partnership, and other key partners such as the National Landscapes teams, are developing the local ambition for nature recovery: the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Nature Recovery Strategy.
Over the last year, thousands of partners, organisations, businesses, farmers and local residents have input into the development process, highlighting the priorities for the region and what they want to see in the strategy. The team behind the strategy have been from Bude to Penzance and across the sea to all the inhabited islands of the Isles of Scilly to ensure as many voices as possible have been heard. Throughout the process a range of engagement tools have been used including surveys, a public roadshow, workshops, leaflets, engagement with and via intermediaries, events and partnership meetings. Engagement has targeted key groups like farmers and landholders, businesses, academics and environmental professionals, as well as the general public across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The engagement has taken a two-phase approach.
Phase one from June – November 2023 included:
Public survey receiving 1053 responses
Online map where audiences could ‘place a pin’ where known habitats and species exist receiving 787 contributions
Farmers survey with 24 contributions
Farm intermediary survey gaining 20 organisational responses
Strategic survey with responses from 57 major organisations
Public roadshow visiting 28 individual events engaging with important audiences and partners including Town and Parish Councils, National Farmers Union and the Peatland Partnership
Visit to Isles of Scilly where we spoke to residents and interested parties across all 5 inhabited islands
Priority discovery workshops running from May-November 2023
Launch of the bi-monthly LNRS newsletter [Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Nature Partnership (list-manage.com)]
Phase two which started in March this year and is ongoing included:
Farmer engagement including the launch of an FAQs webpage, farming with nature video, leaflet and a Regenerative Farming Hub at the Royal Cornwall Show
Priority refinement workshops to assess the emerging priority habitats
Workshops on approaches to habitat and species mapping
Conference presentations
Informational leaflets
Meetings with the Marine and Coastal Partnership, National Landscapes, Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Leadership Board and the Voluntary Sector Forum.
Due to the mammoth engagement efforts of the Nature Recovery Team, the development of the LNRS has reached some pivotal milestones. Thanks to a partnership with the University of Exeter, an institution home to impressive mapping capabilities, we are starting to get tantalising glimpses of extracts of the Nature Recovery Opportunity Area maps. These maps will highlight where nature recovery might be possible across the region and can guide projects, land managers and those wanting to take action for nature. The maps reflect local preferences for priority species and habitats shaped by the extensive engagement outlined above. When pulled together, the emerging Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Nature Recovery Strategy will help frame what needs to happen by One and All for us to make the important steps towards achieving our collective target of 30% of land, rivers and seas well managed for nature by 2030.
Looking ahead over summer and autumn 2024, Cornwall Council and the Local Nature Partnership are undertaking further engagement to gain views on the draft priorities and opportunity maps through a series of workshops. Following this, there will be a full Public Consultation on the draft LNRS in the autumn. If you would like more information on any of our workshops or the development of the LNRS please get in contact at grow-nature@cornwall.gov.uk.
