The Pen Mightier than the Sword for Porthleven Copywriter

What happens to you when your business primarily revolves around creating content for events, but events are no longer happening?

Suzie Inman of Mightier Words has found that out for herself over the past few months. Inman, who lends her copywriting and communications skills to Porthleven’s Food Festival amongst others, has seen a significant dent lodged in her work over what would usually be the busiest period for events and outdoor activities across Cornwall.

“Porthleven Food Festival took the decision six weeks before the festival to cancel, even before the government lockdown commenced, as we could see it coming. That means my entire income stream up until the end of April disappeared,” she said.

While Inman has had the safety net of the government’s self-employed support package, the road ahead as a freelancer may be very different to how it looked in the past.

“The worry for me is what is coming, or in my case, perhaps, what is not coming. I generally move from one job to the next, and while COVID has definitely impacted on my line of work I do hope the future may look bright. As sad as it is, marketing people seem to be the first to go when money is tight. But, you still need to market, so I see that there will be a place for freelancers to possibly fill this void,” she said.

Suzie has used her time in lockdown to further her skills across marketing and communications, linking with the Skills Hub to improve her knowledge across the digital space in the hope of giving her a further edge over the copywriting competition.

“I did an online session with Unlocking Potential about using your data to drive marketing, and through that somebody suggested that I might want to get in touch with the Skills Hub as I was interested in training. I just see this as a time that if I can’t be working it’s an opportunity to fill the gaps in the areas that I don’t have the depth of knowledge that I would like to have,” she said.

Improving efficiency, increasing productivity, and linking your business with training and learning opportunities is what the Skills Hub does best.
