The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Historic Environment Record is a publicly accessible resource maintained by Cornwall Council. The HER provides detailed information on historic and archaeological buildings, sites, and monuments in order to promote public engagement with their heritage, and the distinctiveness of Cornish culture.
The HER team forms part of the wider Strategic Historic Environment team, and their primary responsibilities involve the curation and maintenance of the HER.
As a team we also undertake regional and national projects to develop knowledge of our heritage, as well as projects that improve functionality of using heritage data in planning and development schemes, ensuring our heritage is recognised and protected throughout the development process.
In addition, the HER serves as a valuable resource for research, serving as an index of sites and relevant literature which can be consulted by members of the public, academics, and other researchers free of charge.
The HER also serves a role in the ongoing management of the landscape; it is consulted during the planning process in order that informed decisions can be made regarding the suitability of developments and land-use schemes.
Lastly – but not least - we undertake outreach around Cornwall and liaise with members of the public, volunteers, archaeologists, as well as other stakeholders. We rely on our keen and invaluable volunteer teams to assist and support all the work that we do.
