The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Historic Environment Record (HER) is a publicly accessible resource maintained by the Strategic Historic Environment team of Cornwall Council. The HER provides detailed information on historic and archaeological buildings, sites, and monuments in order to promote public engagement with their heritage, and the distinctiveness of Cornish culture.

The HER team forms part of the wider Strategic Historic Environment team, and their primary responsibilities involve the curation and maintenance of the HER.

As a team, we also carry out regional and national projects to increase understanding of our heritage. We also work on projects that help make heritage data easier to use in planning and development, so it is recognised and protected throughout the process.

In addition, the HER serves as a valuable resource for research, serving as an index of sites and relevant literature which can be consulted by members of the public, academics, and other researchers free of charge.

The HER plays an important role in managing Cornwall's landscape. It is used during the planning process to help make informed decisions about development and land use.

Lastly – but not least - we undertake outreach around Cornwall and liaise with members of the public, volunteers, archaeologists, as well as other stakeholders. We rely on our keen and invaluable volunteer teams to assist and support all the work that we do.
