A call out to all artists, stone masons and creatives – we are looking for expressions of interest to design, or design and create, a lasting memorial stone for storm-washed human remains

Human remains are often exposed along the shoreline of Cornwall following winter storms. These are often the remains of storm-washed individuals who died at sea and were historically buried along the coastline by local communities.

In November 2022, the skeletal remains of a male were discovered on the cliff above Newtrain Bay, Trevone, on the north coast.

The aim of this commission is to create a memorial stone to mark the grave of human remains from Trevone. The monument must fit within the cemetery guidelines published by Padstow Town Council and will require their final approval of the design. The commission will be either for the full design and creation of the memorial, or the design alone, which should be easily carved by modern tools onto a stone fitting.

The stone must fit the character of the surrounding memorials and not draw undue attention to itself, given that it will be in a public space where the local community visit the private graves of loved ones.

It is the intention to reuse the grave plot for further storm-washed remains as and when they are discovered in the parish, so provision should either be given to adding further details of individuals in the future or, ideally, the wording being generic enough to cover future burials. There is potential for the inclusion of a discreet QR code which could provide more individual details of the remains interred.

Find out more about the details for the commission & how to express your interest by reading the commission information document.

The deadline for the Expressions of Interest is 12 noon on Wednesday 18th September 2024.
