Go Cornish Celebration
Dyth da,
Thank you to everyone who joined us, on Friday 25 June at Lys Kernow in Truro, for our colourful and musical Go Cornish Celebration - where Kernewek, the Cornish language, took centre stage.
As part of Speak Cornish Week, this special celebration, commissioned by Cornwall Council’s Fifth Nation Members’ Working Group, showcased the impact of Kernewek in our schools and communities. The busy morning includes the launch of the new Go Cornish schools’ sampler pack, presentation of Go Cornish Bronze Awards to successful schools, and performances from pupils sharing songs, rhymes and stories in Kernewek.
Lys Kernow was transformed into a lively gallery space, featuring Cornish language artwork created by local schools — with Kernewek at the heart of every piece.
If you couldn't join us - here's our news release with a short video from the event (We actually had 11 schools join us on the day): Children take part in Kernewek celebration during Speak Cornish Week
This is an important moment for the Cornish language. With Part III recognition under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, the forthcoming Cornwall Council Cornish Language Strategy, and progress of the Cornish Language Bill, there is much to celebrate. Cornwall Council is proud to support the Go Cornish programme, which is already embedding Kernewek in 30 primary schools across Cornwall, with growing interest from many more.
We hope you took the opportunity to try a little kewsel Kernewek (speak Cornish), explore the new resources, and join us in celebrating our unique language, culture and sense of Cornish belonging.
It was great to kevewya war-barth (celebrate together).
