IslaThe YEP! team are delighted to have supported Isla on her journey into work and training.
Isla is 19 and joined the YEP programme in July 2025 after finishing college. At that time, she felt unsure about her future. Many of her friends stayed in education, and she worried about becoming isolated. She did not know what her next steps should be.
With help from her YEP Adviser, Jane, Isla joined a council research project that looked at barriers to green training and jobs in Cornwall. Taking part helped her meet new people and build her confidence. She learned that she could work well with others and take part in group activities.
Jane also supported Isla to apply for a beauty therapy apprenticeship at a local hotel. Isla was offered a place and loved learning new practical skills. She showed real talent in her work. Because she joined later in the year, she was unable to catch up on the coursework and could not stay on the programme. Although this was disappointing, the employer gave her excellent feedback and encouraged her to apply again next year. This confirmed that beauty therapy and massage are the right careers for her.
With renewed motivation, Isla has taken positive steps forward. She has applied to Adult Education to gain her Level 2 Maths and English, which will improve her job and training options. She has also started a Level 1 Massage course. She enjoys learning more about the industry and developing her skills.
“It has been really helpful to have a mentor I can talk to about my options, who listens and gives encouragement. Having this support has made me feel more motivated and confident about finding the right training and future employment.”- Isla
Through the research project and meeting new people, Isla has gained confidence in speaking to others. She has also recognised her transferable skills, such as communication, teamwork, and reliability. These skills have helped her feel ready to explore new opportunities.
Isla has clear goals for the future. She plans to complete her Maths and English, keep building her practical skills, and start volunteering one day a week to gain work experience. She is also applying for casual and part‑time jobs to earn an income while continuing her training. She is focused on developing skills in facial treatments and massage, the areas she hopes to work in.
“Thank you again, we’d be lost and very disheartened without your support.” - mum
The YEP team are very proud of Isla. She has shown determination and resilience, and she now has a clear plan and growing confidence for the future.

Learning new skills on the Laptop When Zara joined YEP, she was facing big challenges in education. These had a serious impact on her mental and physical health. At the start of our meetings, she was getting regular support from two mental health services. “I am actually excited for the future, which is a new feeling for me.” - Zara
She found it hard to meet in places where she felt calm. Eileen, Zara's her key worker, stepped in to help. Together the discussed and found safe spaces to meet. Together, they made a plan: Zara wanted to pass her Maths and get a job. She joined Plymouth Argyle and worked with Caitlin Jones to achieve her Maths qualification. Zara met often and worked hard.
Zara was offered a job and was delighted. However, after starting, she found the environment challenging and began to feel uncomfortable. This started to affect her confidence and wellbeing. Eileen supported Zara by talking through the situation and helping her explore the best next steps. Together, they agreed it would be better for Zara to leave and continue her job search. Eileen guided her through this process and helped her stay focused on her goals.
With Eileen’s support, Zara soon found a new job that matched her goals. She is doing well in this role and enjoys the challenges and chances to learn. Her team works together and creates a positive space where everyone helps each other. Thanks to Eileen’s guidance, Zara has grown in confidence and independence. Her mental health has improved, and she no longer needs weekly support.
At YEP, we are proud to see how working together can change lives. Zara’s journey shows what can happen with the right help and determination. We wish her every success as she builds her future and works toward her dream of seeing the world.
Zara’s journey shows what can be achieved with determination and the right support. We wish her every success as she builds her future and works toward her dream of seeing the world.
“Because of my time on YEP, I’m moving forward and trying new things. It has helped so much with my confidence. I am actually excited for the future, which is a new feeling for me.” - Zara

Recently, the YEP Team helped a young person as he approached the end of his supported internship. We worked with him to build confidence and plan his next steps. He felt anxious about the change, so we offered reassurance and practical guidance. His provider had found a volunteering placement, and we helped finalise the details. To make this possible, an enhanced DBS check was needed. YEP funded the check, allowing him to take this exciting step toward his future.
The main goals were to boost his confidence and ease his anxiety, and to support a smooth move into a school volunteering placement in September. YEP worked with the school to process his DBS application, which we funded. We also stayed in touch to make sure Cornwall Council’s work experience paperwork was complete before his start date.
Once he started his volunteering placement, we arranged regular meetings. These meetings helped to give reassurance and ongoing support. These check-ins helped him stay in the role, build new skills, and gain valuable experience for his future progression.
The YEP Team are extremely proud that this young person has exceeded his goal. He has maintained his placement and increased his volunteering from two to three days a week. This will help to see how he manages part-time hours—a significant achievement. He is committed to building his confidence and skills as he prepares to apply for a teaching assistant role or similar in the future. His confidence has grown and feedback from his placement shows he is now a valued member of the team.
‘Meeting up with someone I feel comfortable with is really important to me. Meeting me in different environments in the community and my volunteering placement, I like that flexibility. Providing courses I can attend is a good stepping stone for me. YEP provides me with a safety net of security which boosts my confidence’. - Young Person

Blake left college because the large campus felt overwhelming. As a result Blake faced uncertainty about his next steps. With a diagnosis of ADHD and awaiting an ASD assessment, he wanted to study either Mechanics or Personal Fitness. However, he needed the right environment to thrive.
Through the YEP program, Blake’s key worker at PLUSS introduced him to a Personal Fitness course at Duchy College. The smaller campus seemed like a perfect fit. After attending an interview, Blake found the staff welcoming and supportive of his needs. His mum had concerns about attendance, as Blake would need motivation to wake up early and catch his bus.
In September, Blake started the course—and he’s loving it. The smaller groups and campus have made a big difference. He’s been on time every day for his bus and is enthusiastic about the future. His mum is thrilled to see him moving forward with confidence.
“My advisor’s knowledge was so helpful. Without him, I wouldn’t have known about the Sports courses at Duchy College. Getting help with a concessionary bus pass was also a big relief—the cost of transport could have stopped me from going to college.” - Blake
This project supports young people aged 16–24 who are not in work, school, or training—or who might soon be in that situation. It helps them find opportunities and build brighter futures.

Skills SessionThe Youth Engagement Programme (YEP) recently held its first skills session. Jane and Eileen (YEP Key Workers) led the session, which focused on transferable skills, CV writing, and cover letter creation.
The session helped young people see that they already have useful skills. These skills often come from hobbies, school, or everyday life. Jack and Lola joined the session and learned something surprising. Jack found out that his love for LEGO helped him build pattern recognition skills. Lola discovered she has a growth mindset, which will help her in her dream job as an editor.
Everyone worked on their CVs and learned how to show off their skills in cover letters. They talked about how to match their strengths to different jobs.
"I’ll re-structure my CV and cover letter with the new skills I’ve learned I have." - Lola
“The interactivity and how relatable it was” were his favourite parts." - Jack
Helping young people recognise and develop their skills is a key part of building confidence and preparing for the world of work. These sessions aim to show that no skill is too small or too niche - everything can be valuable. By learning how to talk about their strengths, young people are better equipped to apply for jobs. They help young people to explore career paths, and feel proud of what they bring to the table.
We’re excited to run more sessions like this. We love seeing young people discover their unique skills and goals. Each person brings something special, and these sessions help them see it.
If you are 16-24 and NEET and would like to attend this or other similar employability sessions, book your spot by emailing: yep@cornwall.gov.uk

Coffee and SupportWhen Yas first joined the Youth Engagement Programme (YEP), she felt let down by her time in school. Because of her ADHD, she found it hard to focus and engage and she left without any qualifications. The experience made her anxious about returning to education.
But Yas had a clear goal, she wanted to become a personal trainer. She loves sports, and goes to the gym often. She started teaching herself about fitness and nutrition using books lent to her by her gym’s owner.
To help her ease back into learning, YEP bought her a Sports Coaching Techniques course. They also loaned her a laptop through the Digital Inclusion scheme. Yas completed the course quickly and confidently.
Next, YEP connected with Caitlin and Taylor from Plymouth Argyle Community Trust. They helped Yas start her Maths and English Functional Skills courses. She also began a Level 2 Sports Leadership course, which will help her gain work experience. Yas has already been offered a placement at her gymnastics gym.
"I’m really glad I started on YEP and I can actually see a future for myself when I couldn’t before." - Yas
Soon, Yas will take part in short YEP workshops to boost her employability. These include sessions on transferable skills, CV writing, and cover letters.
Currently, Yas is still working on her Maths, English, and Sports Leadership qualifications. She meets with Caitlin and Taylor for support and joins Eileen for study sessions and coffee. Yas isn’t sure what her next step will be yet—but she’s excited to keep moving forward and build a career in sports.
YEP helps young people succeed, no matter where they live or what their background is.

Naked Solar Isaac is a determined and enthusiastic young man from Kilkhampton, near Bude. This September, he will start a supported internship with Naked Solar. Naked Solar is a leading solar panel company near Newquay that has grown a lot recently. This is a big step for Isaac. He is autistic and has always wanted a job where he can use his practical skills and his business ideas. From a young age, Isaac liked hands-on work and sales. He wanted to learn more, so he tried for an apprenticeship with The National Grid. He worked hard to get a place on their national programmes. But living in North Cornwall made it hard for him to find chances like this, even though he was very dedicated.
Now, with help from the team at Naked Solar, Isaac is ready to succeed. His internship will start in the company’s new office. There, he will learn about every step of solar projects. He will learn about solar projects from the first question to the finished installation. This hands-on experience will teach him about renewable energy. It will also help him build the skills and confidence he needs for his future career.
Jacob Wheeler, Training Coordinator at Naked Solar, shared his excitement about Isaac joining the team:
“We’re really looking forward to working with Isaac. His enthusiasm and drive are exactly what we value here at Naked Solar. This is just the beginning of what we hope will be a long and rewarding journey for him.”
Isaac’s story shows why it is important to give everyone a fair chance. When young people get support to follow their dreams, they can achieve great things. This is true for everyone, no matter their background or location.

Kyle's Journey
Kyle referred himself to the YEP project on Friday, 18 April. He had heard about YEP from friends. He had dropped out of college during the second year of his Level 2 Carpentry course because he wasn’t enjoying it. He then signed up with a recruitment agency but was only getting the odd shift at a local Spar shop. Kyle wasn’t sure what he wanted to do next.At the same time, Jane (YEP Co-ordinator) was working with an employer. The employer needed an apprentice to help with his growing kitchen fitting business. Jane contacted the employer and arranged for them all to meet and talk about this opportunity.
Preparing for the Opportunity
Before the meeting, Jane worked with Kyle on his employability skills. She practiced interview techniques, talked about employer expectations, and updated his CV.
The meeting went well, and the employer offered Kyle a work trial for the following week. Jane coached Kyle before the trial and explained what the job would be like. She gave Kyle tips on how to be on time, dress properly, take initiative, and meet the employer’s expectations. She also completed a work experience form with the employer.
Cornwall Councils work experience team contacted the employer and completed all the necessary checks.
From Trial to Full-Time Work
Kyle completed a successful trial day and was offered a work experience placement. Jane stayed in regular contact with both Kyle and the employer during this time.
At the end of the placement, they held another meeting to discuss next steps. Kyle said he didn’t want to return to college to complete the educational part of an apprenticeship. So, the employer asked for help writing a contract, which YEP supported. YEP also helped to negotiate Kyle’s wage.
Kyle has been working full-time since Tuesday 1 July and is loving his new job. He’s learning new skills and travelling across the Southwest for different jobs. His confidence has grown, and he now sees a bright future ahead. He’s also learning to drive and is excited about saving for his first car.
A Positive Impact
The employer was so pleased with the process that he’s asked us to help him find two more employees. He said it takes the stress out of recruiting, as we match the right young person to the job, set up the work trial, and monitor progress for six months.
“Jane got me signed up onto YEP and very quickly got me a job which I absolutely love and am extremely grateful for. I’m learning loads of new skills, I have something to get up for and money in my pocket. The best thing is that I am proud of myself and that’s new. My friends all went away to college, I felt left behind and a bit lost to be honest. Now I can take them out for Maccies instead of the other way round—and I’m saving for a car.”— Kyle
Well done Kyle, Jane and the YEP Team!

YEP helps another young person. When this young person joined YEP in 2024, they faced several challenges. This included anxiety, dyslexia, and not having English or Math qualifications. Their goal was to become “Job Ready.” They wanted to create a CV and cover letter, practice interview skills, and search for jobs online.
They were eager to learn and improve their skills. So, they took part in one-on-one support with YEP key worker Ryan. Together, they worked on their CV and cover letter, focusing on their strengths. This helped boost their confidence.
“I didn’t realise how good I was at things.” – young person
Ryan, supported them with mock interviews. These sessions helped build confidence and improve their answers. They also learned how important it is to research companies and tailor applications.
When the young person felt ready, Ryan provided a laptop through the Digital Inclusion Scheme. This allowed them to study for English and Math qualifications. Both their key worker and teacher noticed their growing confidence. They now ask questions when they need help and show determination when solving problems. They are set to take their Math exam at the end of July 2025 and will then begin their English course.
After finishing their studies, this young person hopes to work in animal care. They would like to work in a dog kennel, using their husbandry and welfare skills to care for dogs.
Alongside their studies and job search, the young person has grown in confidence. They are now more open to talking about their goals and future.
In their own words: “I feel more confident with the future and am happy that I now have a structured plan for the time being.”
Another fantastic example of how YEP can help young people.
