The Cycling Hub We Want

During lockdown the number of people cycling grew rapidly. Residents are clearly telling us that the Cornwall they want for the future includes more opportunities to cycle and walk. They would like cycling and walking encouraged to reduce traffic and also to improve wellbeing. Some initiatives are already underway:

  • Cornwall will host the Grand Depart Stage of the Tour of Britain on the 5th September 2021. It will be the biggest sporting event ever to be hosted in Cornwall.
  • Cornwall Council is already investing in more cycle routes.
  • Now, working closely with British Cycling and Sport England, Cornwall Council is developing a regional Cycle Hub within Cornwall that will be a show case facility for the whole country.

The Cycle Hub will be a home for cycling in Cornwall and create more opportunities for everyone of any ability and income to cycle and improve their health and well-being. A Centre which will provide a safe environment to cycle and inspire a new generation of cyclists to lead healthier and more active lives. The breadth of facilities proposed will give opportunities for riders at all different stages, from learning to ride for the first time, through to cycle sport competition and training.

Over the past months we have worked with various organisations in Cornwall to develop a concept masterplan with early designs for the site we would like to use. You can find more details about the plans on this site and on the Cornwall Tour of Britain site, where you will also find surveys for Clubs, Schools and partner organisations. Please note the consultation closes on 28 September 2020.

We're keen to make sure the Cycling Hub will be a venue that you and your family will want to use. We want to make it as accessible as possible for everyone so it will make a real difference in levels of people regularly using a bicycle for sport, leisure or commuting.

  • How can we make the Cycle Hub a facility that encourages you and other people in Cornwall to cycle more?

We want to encourage all Cornwall residents to cycle more. Here are some of our ideas. We would like your feedback and suggestions.

    • The Cycle hub can provide activities for people who would like to get fit on a bike, try out cycling, have some fun on a bike and learn new skills in a safe and inclusive environment, including through organised sessions.
    • We could organise sessions where people could come to test out e-bikes as well as other bikes.
    • The Cycle Hub can provide dedicated facilities for teaching road awareness for adults.
    • The Cycle Hub will be a  dedicated facility for all schools and colleges in Cornwall for the provision of learn to ride sessions, highway safety, bike handling skills, Cycle maintenance training, through to racing (bike hire would be available). There will be inside facilities/classroom - for fitness and theory training and for wet weather sessions
    •   The Cycling Hub can provide a safe and suitable place where people with a disability can have the opportunity to train, meet others and be active. We can offer adaptive bikes and would work in partnership with the national ‘Wheels for All’ scheme.
