In 2020 Redruth received a share of the £95 million-pound High Streets Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) fund, one of only 10 places across the South West to benefit from this national scheme. It followed a bid led by Cornwall Council in partnership with the key stakeholders in Redruth who came together to form the Redruth HSHAZ Project Board.

The investment has acted as a catalyst for heritage-led regeneration to improve the prosperity of the town centre so that it can continue to serve the local community and businesses, adapting to the challenges that all high streets have experienced over the last few decades.

One particular success of the RHSHAZ scheme has been the redevelopment of the Buttermarket by Redruth Revival Community Interest Company, established by local business people to create a strong, sustainable and socially inclusive economy in Redruth. The heritage-led regeneration of a Grade II listed site involving in-depth research, community consultation and rigorous attention to detail.

The Buttermarket now hosts a variety of businesses & provides a thriving space for the community and other members of the public to gather, hold events, and enjoy their time.

As a result of this success, we have commissioned Thread to document the process of the regeneration; offering a model for sustainable adaptation, showing how listed buildings can remain relevant, low-carbon and socially valuable.
