Upgrade underway at Whalesborough Weir will help Safeguard Bude Canal’s Future

Over the summer 2026 work has progressed on a major improvement to the water and siltation management features at Whalesborough Weir. Installation of a new headwall and major refurbishment of the penstock and culvert are being delivered to help secure the long-term management of water levels within the Bude Canal and improve the resilience of this iconic site.

The existing penstock, which helps manage the split between water entering the canal system and that which flows into the onward river system, was becoming increasingly unreliable and difficult to operate. As the penstock can be used to both release flood waters, which carry most of silt entering the canal, and supply water to the riven when levels fall below the height of the weir, this had the potential to cause problems in both high run-off events and periods of drought.

To address these challenges, Cornwall Council has progressed the replacement of the existing penstock with a modern automated system. The scheme also includes a new outfall sluice and enhanced telemetry equipment, providing real-time monitoring of water levels and flows throughout the canal network.

These improvements will help Cornwall Council continue to manage water entering the canal system effectively, reducing the build-up of silt, supporting the operation of the Harbour and helping maintain water levels that are important for the canal's heritage, environment and visitors.

Construction began in Spring 2026 and remains on track for completion in Autumn 2026.
