The Forest for Cornwall is a flagship project of Cornwall Councils Climate Change Action Plan to tackle the climate emergency and help Cornwall strive towards becoming carbon neutral by 2030.
The Cornwall Council owned land proposed is located immediately South of the existing woodland planted on Bodmin Beacon in 1995. This is between Whitestone, Gladstone and Bawden Roads, PL30 5JH. Historically the land has been let to tenant farmers and used for grassland and production of arable crops. Recent changes have provided an opportunity for Cornwall Council to create a new woodland on this land that will result in a mixture of trees, shrubs and open space to be planted.
The new woodland has been planned to fulfil all the statutory requirements and guiding principles outlined in the UK Forestry Standard. The main objectives are to connect and expand woodland and hedgerow habitats across the nature reserve and surrounding land and provide recreational space for the community.
Design of the new woodland aims to allow for approximately 20 % open space in the form of tracks and open glades to maximise potential habitat for a wide range of wildlife. The aim is to plant a diverse range of trees, including native species such as Beech, Oak, Small Leaved Lime, Birch, Alder, Wild Cherry, Hazel and a small component of coniferous species.
The window of opportunity for planting new woodland is becoming increasingly challenging and requires a lot of key elements falling into place in time for the planting season. Sadly we were not in a position to proceed with planting in the 2022/23 season so we decided is would be better to postpone planting until the 2023/24 season. Whilst this is disappointing, we want to get this right and give the trees the best possible chance to thrive. This will be a community woodland, so we are also working on exciting plans to involve a range of people across Cornwall as well as the local community so everyone can have an opportunity to take part in planting.
