Active Travel Improvements on Bickland Water Road are designed to make the area safer and more accessible those walking and cycling, by providing a continuous, widened path along the eastern side of Bickland Water Road.
Commencing in early October 2026 for a period of twelve months, the existing footway will be widened to three meters width where possible, allowing shared use between pedestrians and cyclists.
Four new signalised crossings will be installed to improve safety between residential areas, businesses and local schools, and junction widths will be realigned to improve crossing distances and reduce vehicle speeds.
Improvements will also include new kerbing, electrical ducting, resurfacing and road markings, together with streetlighting and some seating areas.
Phases of Work
The first section of work will run from Union Corner roundabout to the Levant roundabout, where we will be increasing the footway width, install a new pedestrian-controlled crossing point on the southern side and relocate street-lighting.
Next will be Levant Rise roundabout to Bickland Business Centre; installing a new footway on the verge and a new pedestrian-controlled crossing point.
Bickland junction to Empire Way will follow, where the footway will be widened, the street-lighting relocated and the layby reduced in length.
Moving on to the section from Empire Way to Watson Marlow, controlled pedestrian points will be installed and the footway extended in width.
Watson Marlow to St. Francis Primary School will be next, again for extended footway width and new pedestrian-controlled crossing points.
Between St. Francis Primary School and Falmouth Business Park, we will then extend the width of the footway and install street lighting.
Following this, the footway between Falmouth Business Park and Bosmeor Road will be extended in width and ducting for new street lighting installed.
Finally, a further 270m of electrical ducting will be installed for the new street-lighting columns, followed by the resurfacing of the newly extended footways.
Traffic Management
Works will be carried out during the daytime, under temporary traffic lights, which will be manually operated during peak times to ease the impact on traffic flow.
Delays are likely so please allow extra time for your journeys.
The surfacing works towards the end of the project, will require a series of road closures and will therefore be carried out at nighttime with a diversion routes in place.
Thank you in advance for your patience and support whilst these works are underway, it is much appreciated. We will post project updates here periodically as the works progress.
