The Cornwall AONB Management Plan is a statutory plan. It is Cornwall Council’s duty under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 to produce the Management Plan and review it every five years.

The Management Plan sets out the policies and actions by which Cornwall’s protected landscape should be managed. Cornwall AONB covers approximately 27% of Cornwall and is unique as it is made up of 12 separate geographical sections, all diverse and distinctive with different management actions to conserve and enhance their individual landscape and special character. A section of the Tamar Valley AONB is also in Cornwall but is managed and administered separately. As is, the Isles of Scilly AONB and the North Devon AONB. There are approximately 95 parish/town councils that are within or have some of the Cornwall AONB in their parish/town.

The current Management Plan 2016-2021 has been reviewed following feedback from the first consultation. The Cornwall AONB Unit team undertake this task on behalf of the Council in consultation with the Cornwall AONB Partnership organisations, stakeholders, Parish/Town Councils, general public, community groups etc.

An initial Public Consultation Survey was undertaken in the Autumn 2020 together with a series of themed Stakeholder Topic Discussion Group meetings. Thank you to those that took part in this previous consultation to provide much needed local knowledge for managing landscape and sustainable development within the AONB communities and telling us about any landscape issues and pressures in your area/areas of interest. Your feedback and comments have been used to write the Draft Plan which was out for Stakeholder and Public Consultation during Aug-Oct 2021. Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. Responses will now be collated and considered in the next stage of amending the Plan by end December 2021.

Please note:

  • The Plan will be designed before it is published, with a wealth of photos, infographics and images but this survey is on the text narrative only.
  • The published Plan will be on the Cornwall AONB website as an online and interactive document.
  • As an online printable version, the Plan will be a fully accessible, inclusive document, easy to view and navigate without the need for scrolling through the whole Plan.
  • Once the Plan is published, an audio version is also planned to be produced.
  • A summary abridged version of the Plan will also be produced once the main Plan has been approved and adopted which is scheduled for May 2022.

Draft Planning & Development Technical Appendix - Requirements for Agricultural Buildings - this will be finalised and accompany the Management Plan document.

Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Screening report was formally issued with the management plan draft to our local Natural England, Historic England and Environment Agency contacts for information and comment.

Cornwall State of the AONB and Cornwall AONB Atlas 2021: We have also commissioned the Cornwall State of the AONB report which has now been completed by LUC, in addition they have developed a Cornwall AONB Atlas, an interactive mapping tool in support of the State of the AONB Report. These are available on our website for viewing in conjunction with the Management Plan.

Please note: The current 2016-2021 Management Plan remains valid during this review period. Following a consultation with the AONB Partnership and key stakeholders the review period will be extended to enable the AONB Partnership to reflect on Covid-19, to account for government’s response to the Landscape Review in a more considered way and to ensure that the approach to public consultation is planned in a sensitive and inclusive manner which can be dynamic to changing restrictions. The new Management Plan will be published in 2022 once it has been reported to Cornwall Council Cabinet in May 2022 for approval and adoption.
