The Gover Community Support Group

The Gover Community support group was set up initially by myself after realising that there are many people in the area who live alone, are really elderly or have underlying health problems. If they were isolated they would struggle to get prescriptions, provisions etc. So the area was divided into roads and streets and a call for a volunteer for each of those areas. The response was amazing and a network of volunteers was set up very quickly. One of these wonderful volunteers joined forces with me and between us we were kept very busy co ordinating the other volunteers. Volunteer Cornwall contacted to see what we were doing, we were then added to their list and work started to come in from them. We were also provided with official letters to state that any volunteer was on official business. Eventually I made contact with other groups in the area and now we all tend to work supporting each other where and when that is needed. Now we have come to a point where the volunteers who worked within their areas are happy to continue to do so and are doing a wonderful job. The work has eased but I know that there is a volunteer available at the drop of a hat should I require them for something. We have made some mistakes and have learnt a lot along the way. But being under the umbrella of Volunteer Cornwall has helped us tremendously, somewhere where we can get answers to questions.

Mostly it has been and still is a rewarding experience. We have lost some volunteers and others have come forward to take their place. But on the whole because we now know, sort of, what we are doing safely and with the back up of other groups and VC.
